On the morning of September 20, the 12th Straits Forum Conference was held in Xiamen.

At the conference, Wang Yang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and chairman of the CPPCC, delivered a message via video. He noted that the development of cross-strait relations must be built on solid popular support and driven by the people on both sides of the Straits. The Forum has been held for 12 straight years since its complete success in 2009.
Wang stressed that we need to encourage more interactions between our peoples and deepen the integrated development across the Straits. This is not just in the service of the righteous cause, but also for the greater good. In recent years, the mainland has launched a series of measures to benefit Taiwan and our compatriots. More and more Taiwanese come to the mainland to study, work, start up business and live. We will further improve the institutional arrangements and policy guarantee that benefit our fellow Taiwanese compatriots. Efforts will also be made to enhance the quality and efficiency of cross-strait exchange and cooperation. All these are meant to help more Taiwanese youths pursue their dreams, forge ahead and bring their dreams into reality on the mainland.

The 12th Straits Forum continues to be themed by "expanding non-governmental exchanges and deepening integrative development", and it focuses on grassroots and youth groups from both sides of the Taiwan Straits. There are 34 events in the four major sections of the forum conference and youth exchange, grass-roots exchange, cultural exchange and economic exchange, plus 12 activities held in the same period by relevant districts and cities, totaling 46 activities.

Despite being affected by factors such as the COVID-19 outbreak, the Forum has received widespread attention from across the Straits, with nearly 2,000 Taiwanese compatriots participating in the events. This year, the Organizing Committee creatively organized the activities both online and offline, thus breaking through the influence of time and space constraints brought about by the pandemic. At the conference, people from all walks of life in Taiwan also expressed their blessings via video to congratulate on the successful opening of the Forum.

Leaders from both sides of the Straits addressed the conference, including Yu Weiguo, Secretary of the CPC Fujian Provincial Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee of Fujian Provincial People's Congress, Wu Chengdian, Chairman of New Party (Taiwan), and Yang Pinhua, Vice Chairman of the Association for Cultural and Trade Exchange of Ethnic Minorities on Both Sides of the Taiwan Straits.
Cross-strait representatives also made speeches during the conference. Three of them exchanged their views on cross-strait exchanges and interactions, including Zhang Xinyi, executive director of Shangqu Kaixin Creative Planning Ltd.
